Farragut Square

HOW:

I'll admit that this was not my first choice, but when a beautiful day presents itself, so does extremely long lines at Farragut square. Analyzing the sea of lines and strategically choosing a new truck to post on the site weighing the length of the line and the type of food i was in the mood for today, Kraving Kabob won! One of the shorter lines at the square and if it is at all in the same level as tasty kabob, I was in for a great lunch.

The review

What immediately caught my attention is that it had one of my favorite side dishes (french fries) was an option to get with kabobs. That was immediate plus. The fries had some old bay type seasoning that was reminiscent of popeyes cajun fries. The kraving chicken kabob sandwich wrap had seasoned chicken with lettuce and tomatoes. While I enjoyed the fries, the combination of the two didn't really blend well. It's another example of the golden rule that pairing two delicious things doesn't necessary equate to something delicious. As for the wrap itself, it was not very memorable while I won't say that it was bland, it didn't have the flavor that I would krave with Tasty Kabob. I did enjoy the pita bread, however the wrap did not fill me up and if it weren't for the fries, I would've had to grab a snack mid afternoon.

WHY:

6 wheeler review. If this is the only kabob truck around you and you are in desperate need of kabobs, it is a decent option - but with the many choices of kabob/halal type trucks that are usually found in close proximity to each other, I'd skip this one.

Since I started my blog, I've had a couple of food-related invitations that I haven't been able to attend due to scheduling conflicts. However, earlier this week I got an invitation for the opening of Good Stuff Eatery in Crystal City. The official opening is actually this upcoming Wednesday (5/9/12), so I was lucky enough to be invited to the soft opening attended by @chefspike himself. Luckily, I was able to arrange my schedule to attend this event.

Below are some of the pictures I took during the ribbon cutting ceremony...

The line was DEEP.

Spike giving his speech. Very humble guy.

Inside

Standing room only, but the food was non-stop and the drinks were a flowing.

Admittedly, I don't attend many of these type of events, but can I say - Spike can really throw down! Complete with a photo booth, all star dj @Josh Madden and swanky digs - the vibe was definitely great that night. Unfortunately, I don't have a macro lens - so I won't degrade this post by posting blurry pictures of delicious food. First off, let me say the staff was top notch (I don't know if this will be the normal staff at the restaurant). The food was definitely non-stop and the menu consisted of tapas sized servings of:

  • ceaser salad
  • chili
  • mushroom burgers
  • cheese fries
  • bacon burgers
  • Although, it's been on my "to eat" list for a while - I haven't been to the Good Stuff Eatery at Capitol Hill. That boded well this evening as I was able to come in with a fresh palate and enjoy the food for the very first time. Everything was delicious, but I will say the star for me was the mushroom burger; it had a surprise flavor upon every bite that left me wanting more.

It doesn't really fit for me to start rating brick and mortar restaurants with this being a food truck blog, but whether you are in the District or in Virginia, do yourself a favor and drop by this Eatery, it's good stuff.

    HOW:

In a scene dominated by similar food as of late (i.e. Kabob, halal, bbq, etc.) it was a fresh surprise to find a truck with BEACH cuisine. To me, this is the essence of the food truck movement, to have at your disposal a food genre that literally comes to you for you to try. I didn't find out until later that this truck actually DID have a brick and mortar restaurant that they are obviously expanding their customer base.

    The review

As you can see I was a bit hungry, that I started eating before I can take a picture. There was less fish than I would care to have and side of rice and beans was dry and forgettable. The fish, however, was grilled nice and soft and meshed well with the corn salsa - just wished there was more of it. After eating both tacos, I was not completely full and would have to have an afternoon snack later on in the day. I will say though that the guacamole was as tasty guac that I have tasted. Now, I admit I have high standards for fish tacos from my trip to San Diego. The fish tacos I had there were bigger and had more toppings and had a bit of a spice kick to it. Unfortunately, this did not dethrone my San Diego experience, but it does provide for variety for your lunch week, fresh guacamole and good quick bite for someone looking for something different and with a little to decent sized appetite.

    WHY:

7 wheeler review. While not an outstanding review, I would definitely would like to try more on the menu from this truck
