WHAT:

http://www.sweetbitesdesserts.com//. Dessert Truck

The menu: Menu

Sorry, you can't really see, but they just have a bunch of desserts lined up with prices

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

I was excited to review this truck after viewing a Food network show that reviewed the best food trucks in America and the number one was a dessert truck in New York. I've had street food, but street dessert? Obviously, this is not a "lunch", I mixed this with a slice of pepperoni pizza from www.dcslices.com, which I need to update my review, it was better this time. After a very short wait in line,

truck I chose a red velvet cupcake.

The review

cupcake

I am a huge fan of www.georgetowncupcake.com, so this had very big shoes to fill. Unfortunately, it didn't come close. It wasn't horrible, it actually was a very good dessert to have for lunch, but compared to the red velvet cupcakes I've had in Georgetown, this fell short of my expectations.

WHY:

6 wheeler review. Maybe, it is unfair comparison, but it is an obvious correlation - Georgetown cupcakes knocks this out of the water. However, if you don't have the time to travel to Georgetown, this is an acceptable alternative.

WHAT:

http://www.frycaptaindc.com/. Fries and Milkshake truck.

The menu: Menu

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

I was pleasantly surprised to see this truck at Franklin Square. As you've read in my previous posts, my favorite food is french fries. However, amongst the usual suspects, I was the only one that was going to partake in the french fry goodness. Rightfully so, they thought that french fries and a milkshake would not constitute a full lunch. I do this for you guys. Yes, I don't have any comments - and I doubt many people read this - but those of you who've stumbled upon here, need to know the truth about these food trucks. As usual, early lunch departure meant very short line to wait in:

truck

The Review

To be fair, I am going to rate this based on the quality of the food, not for the fact that really, this is more of a snack food truck vs. a lunch food truck. I ordered a double w/mayo dipping sauce

food

The sauce is not your typical ketchup or mustard, this was high class french fries. The dipping sauce really stood out and the french fries were great. I think what made this stand apart from the rest of the fries was the dipping sauce. I have to admit, the fries were good - but they were not over and above. I think they would be in the same category as five guys. Which is not that bad, since I consider those fries the best fries out there right now. The milkshake, again if I can make a comparison - is similar to Potbelly's shakes. Which, again is not a bad thing.

WHY:

7 wheeler review. While the fries and milkshake actually held me over until dinner time, and by all means, a pleasant meal, it did not stand out and actually was reminiscent of the larger chain stores. The saving grace is the dipping sauce, which really made it...

WHAT:

http://www.eatsauca.com. Eat Sauca. Eccentric International cuisine.

The menu:

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

So, as a sidenote, this little experiment of a website has started to slow with the lack of food trucks! When I first saw this site, I mistakenly thought there was an abundance of food trucks in the city. However, checking the food truck tracker, it turns out that I am running thin on choices. Hopefully in the next couple days more and more will show up. Anyway, this is one of the trucks I had yet to review. I've seen it one other time, but didn't try it. I will tell you that this had the most choices in terms of the menu. I was excited to go, so as usual we left work a little early to avoid the long line. We were confused as we arrived at Franklin square as the only truck we saw was one decked out in Entourage.

As we got closer, we confirmed that this was in fact the Sauca truck.

We were once again, the first in line, which was good cause it took a while to decide with that expansive menu. In the end, I chose the mumbai butter chicken - I've found that the first thing on the menu, usually is the most popular dish.

The Review

Before I begin, I will mention that my last review was the Fojol Bros. butter chicken, which I felt was delicious, so maybe it was unfair to review it. The first thing I noticed was the cashews (maybe I should actually read the menu), which I tried for the first couple bites, but ultimately removed all cashews as it just didn't fit the wrap. After that, it was smooth sailing, the spices & herbs was bountiful, and really made the meal. There was not as much as sauce to get the butter chicken taste, but the little that was there was soaked in by the flatbread, so that was a plus.

WHY:

7 WHEELER review. Maybe it was a bias on my past fojol truck meal, but I couldn't rate this at the same level as the butter chicken from Fojol bros. All in all, I would like to go back as the rest of my coworkers were raving about their meals (I must rethink this first item on the menu theory I have).

WHAT:

http://dcslices.com/. Pizza Truck.

The menu:

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

The typical search on Food truck tracker for trucks around us lead us to a truck selling pizza. Again, this is the reason why I love food trucks, for the spontaneity based on your location. Based on the the past few food trucks, I was excited to try this pizza out as the typical food usually get put into a different twist and turn out better. The line was fairly short

We were served pretty quickly. I ended up ordering the buffalo chicken pizza.

The Review

Let me first say, that I should've ordered two slices, because after one slice I was still hungry. Upon first look of the pizza's they were serving, I was a bit disappointed to see the look (thin, little cheese, little meat). I was dubious that I would have as good of a experience as the past food trucks. It definitely tasted the way it looked. Honestly, the Digiorno I get from my supermarket was better than these.

WHY:

This truck I have to give a disappointing 5 wheeler. I had high hopes that it could bring something new to the table, but in the end it is no better than the pizza slices from any other establishment close by.

WHAT:

http://fojol.com/. Indian Food Truck.

The menu:

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

So at this point of the food truck scavenger process, my coworkers and I are pros. We know the best way to experience the food truck is to leave early so you don't spend most of lunch waiting in line. Unfortunately, work calls. This particular day, there were 3 stands at Franklin Square (I am really digging that this area has become a popular area for food trucks). Two of them we have not had yet, and the other we already had. The other food truck we did not try was eatsauca. I picked fojolbros strictly on the line movement. While both had pretty long lines, this line actually moved the quickest.

Once we reached the front of the line, it was a nice festive atmosphere with the crew wearing fake staches - although it was apparent that none of them were Indian. I wondered, how good can this place be if the people selling are not Indian?

The Review

I ordered the meat combo ($1 extra)

I can cook a pretty mean butter chicken, so it was going to take much to impress me. Let me first say, the rice was cooked perfectly so I knew I was in for a treat. As soon as started to taste the spices, I knew this was going to be my staple "indian food" lunch. It was so good that I wish I had some nan bread to soak in the sauce. The chicken was tender and the it was a good amount of food that I was content after lunch.

WHY:

This is definitely a certified 8 wheeler review. For the price, amount of food and the quality of food it is definitely a nice lunch. I guess the only negative thing I can say is the lack of choices, if you had to choose between the meats, definitely get the butter chicken! The line was long, but it moved quickly. Overall though, this has taken the place of the local Indian joint across the street.

WHAT:

takorean.com/. Korean Taco stand.

The menu:

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

On day 3, the crew wised up on the food truck lines. According to takorean's twitter, they were landing at Franklin Square at 11:45am. It was actually their first official day, so we didn't risk it and left at 11:30am when we are right across the street. We get there and to our surprise there was nobody in line.

The Review

After about a 5 minute wait till they got everything set up, we were the first to get our order in. I ordered all 3 types of tacos along with kimchi slaw, with the works.

This is definitely a fusion. While there is no predominate flavor, neither the bulgogi nor the kimchi, there is a definite distinct taste. It is definitely worth a try as this does not taste like your normal korean food nor does it taste like your taco stand. It is a unique blend.

Why:

This food truck gets a 6 wheeler review. While it is a unique blend, I was expecting to get a more taste of either Korean or Mexican. Disappointingly, I don't really get either one. Kim chi and Bulgogi usually have a bold taste, but I didn't get that with these. Perhaps, this is what the truck was going for, but in the end - I was left needing a bit more from these tacos. It is something you do need to try atleast once!

WHAT:

http://eatwonky.co.cc/. Hot Dog and Poutine (French Fries, cheese, gravy) stand.

The menu:

WHERE:

Franklin Square

HOW:

I first heard about poutine last year when I went to Toronto. All the rage on travel websites pointed me to this mysterious dish called poutine as I tend to emerse myself in the culture of the town I am in. I would consider my all time favorite food, french fries, so throwing some cheese curds and gravy is just like if you find out Jessica Alba is into video games - makes something awesome, even better. This lead me to http://smokespoutinerie.com/. As expected, poutine held a special place in my stomach.

So on the DC Food tracker, I saw that something called eatwonky was nearby my work. By the name, I had NO IDEA what to expect. As soon as I googled this, the image that first appeared was POUTINE. I was immediately intrigued, but thought to myself, can POUTINE be a lunch? It really seemed to me as a side order if anything. Luckily, I saw that they also had hot dogs. With that in order - it was on.

The Review

There was a little bit of a line when my co-workers got there, so after the 45 minute lobster truck line, this was a great revelation.

However, while it did not take 45 minutes, the line did move a lot slower. It seemed like there was only guy in the kitchen and the other guy taking orders. So, that was something that I didn't like at first. When we got to the front, the guy taking the order was real cool and explained the menu to us. In the end, I went with the hot dog (as opposed the the wonky dog - which is topped with wonky fries), but I wanted my wonky fries by itself. And also a whoopie pie to boot.

While, I thought the hot dog was just an add on and this was just for the wonky fries, the hot dog was actually very good. I am used to the New York cart hot dogs, but this was a step up from that, even gourmet-esque hot dogs. However, the star, as expected was the wonky fries (poutine). The cheese curds had a very pronounced taste and the gravy was a perfect compliment to the well made fries. While I can't say that this is better than the poutine I had in Toronto, it is definitely on par and you don't have to leave the country.

WHY:

This food truck deserves a 8 WHEELER review. The only cons being the slow line movement, it was a little pricey for the amount of fries they give you and even though the hot dog was good - in the end it's just a hot dog - maybe get a better compliment to the wonky fries. Overall though, definitely a place to go just for the taste of those fries!

What:

@lobstertruckdc, a truck selling lobster rolls.

The menu:

Where:

This review took place on 19th & L St, but check the above Twitter as they change locations daily.

How:

My co-workers and I knew that the lobster truck was close by, so we decided to leave a little early for lunch (back then, early had a different meaning). I rounded up the usual suspects, and as we were leaving we saw one of my other co-workers coming out of the bathroom and asked if she wanted to try a lobster truck. Her eyes lighted up and a huge grin from ear to ear appeared as she also heard about the myth they call the lobster truck.

Fast forward about a 10 minute walk, and the hearts sank as we approached the corner. The line was HUGE.

We decided to wait it out for a little while and see how the line moved. At first, we barely moved - my coworkers were razor thin close to calling it quits. Patience persevered and the line started to move quicker. There was a nice atmosphere, a comradeship of sorts stemming from the buzz of the truck.

When I finally got to the front, I ordered the Lobster Roll meal. They do take credit cards (through an IPAD). As I waited for my other coworkers to recieve their meal, I couldn't help but feel the awkward stares from the others in line. Perhaps, it was the rumor that they may run out of lobster, or maybe perhaps it was the spillage of root beer on my shirt that I discovered later.

The review:

Upon first bite into this lobster roll, it was like heaven. The taste of the Maine Lobster was like an explosion of goodness into my mouth. They do not skimp on the lobster too, as my roll was oozing out lobster on the side. The bread roll itself was delicious, very soft. It came with chips/drink which was standard, my co-workers seemed to like the Maine root beer, although I prefer A&W better.

Why:

This truck gets my certified 9 wheeler. Definitely as of this date, the best tasting food truck I have gotten, but the line and the price definitely deduct a point away from this place. It is definitely not a place you would frequent regularly, you might not have 45 minutes to stand in line. And even if you do, spending $18/day on lunch may not be the best idea. Overall, though this is definitely worth a taste.
